the cloth diaper update

Here we are, 6+ months into the whole cloth diapering thing.  How's it going?  I'm glad you asked... or something.

How much are they getting used?
I still really like cloth diapering.  Admittedly, we generally use disposables when we're out and at night.  After many long nights of changing wet cloth diapers when my kid should be sleeping through the night, I gave up on that part.  Lots of cloth diaper mamas swear there's a way... I was just too tired to keep trying.  And when we're out, I don't really want to deal with a potential poopy cloth diaper.

Gross factor?
While I'm on the subject of poopy cloth diapers, I will also admit that they've gotten a little more tricky.  Exclusively breastfed infant poop doesn't require special treatment of the cloth diapers.  Formula-fed and babies starting solids are a different story.  There's a diaper sprayer involved, and I'm just going to leave it at that.  Still worth it to me, but it's definitely not as easy as it once was.  That said, only once have I had any leakage with a cloth diaper (trying to use it overnight).  So, I haven't had to do any poopy clothes/sheets... so it's a tradeoff, I suppose!

Getting them clean?
As far as washing the cloth diapers, I've been one to use detergents specifically made for this purpose.  I have tried Rockin' Green Hard Rock, bumGenius brand, and Nellie's.  With Lubbock's ridiculously hard water, I liked Rockin' Green the best by itself.  However, after I discovered Calgon water softener (available at Walmart!) and tried it with Nellie's I was sold.  I don't have to strip my diapers nearly as often, which is just a lot of time and energy saved.

Favorite kind?
I am a huge fan of the Flip hybrid system.  I also tried regular bumGenius pocket diapers.  I generally think I'd prefer any system where you reuse the cover a few times before washing and just change the inserts (like Econobum, Grovia, or Best Bottom).  Pocket diapers are just a little too tedious for me.  I did have better success double stuffing pocket diapers and trying them for overnight, but it just couldn't beat a disposable at getting Addy to sleep longer.

The fit?
I have used one-size diapers with lots of success.  I tend to get a better fit with hook & loop closures, but they are a little more trouble to launder than snap closures.  Know that cloth diapers are a bit bulky, which can make pants not fit well.  We use baby leg warmers quite often to circumvent the pants issue.

Cute factor?
I think cloth diapers are cute.  Flip doesn't offer quite as many cutesy prints as some of the other hybrid systems, but I like the solids.  Also, I love baby leg warmers with cloth diapers.  They work great when pants/tights just seem too tedious, and they are just irresistible on chubby little legs!

Diaper rash?
No! Especially using cloth wipes in conjunction with cloth diapers, diaper rash is no longer an issue.

Overall
Love.  We plan to continue with this for some time!
