It's no secret that Collin & I are fans of The Rabbit Room and its contributors. For Christmas Collin gave me this treasure from the Rabbit Room Press:
I finished it today, have read about 175 pages between 8:30 last night and noon today (I know... exciting New Year's Eve, right?). For me to read that much in such a short time span without falling asleep unintentionally is saying pretty good things about this book.
Things that make me like this book:
1. It speaks to my inner child who thought being a girl was a silly reason not to do things and was frequently saying, "I'll DOOO it," and avoiding help.
2. There are sailors and pirates.
3. There is a love story, and even now that anti-girly part of me is screaming, "That's no good reason to like a book!!!"
4.It's well crafted. Things are vividly brought to life with words. Sometimes when someone says that about a book I think, "Oh geez... I don't need to know what it sounds like when the sea wind blows through that girl's hair..." It's not at all like that- it's not that sort of detail. I can just easily picture what's happening, for better or for worse.
5. There's some darkness that I think has yet to be redeemed in book #2 (The Fiddler's Green).
6. George Whitefield and John Wesley made it into the book.
7. I couldn't put it down. The adventure and anticipation, the joys and anguish... oh man. I get so nervous and need to know what happens...
That said, this book is published by a small company and probably won't get tons of hype, but it is well worth your $14 + shipping- check it out at the Rabbit Room Store.
