Taking Care of a Sick Wife

There are few things about marriage I looked forward to more than getting the opportunity to be the primary care-giver for my spouse. There have been a few instances when Cassie needed a little help here or there, but if you know her, it takes quite a bit for her to really ask for help. This weekend was one such instance and I am not sure that I would get a passing grade on my performance.

I feel that I need to give myself a score on how well I performed this weekend. We will work from a 100 point scale and add or subtract points accordingly. Feel free to check my math.

1. You see, Superbowl weekend is a very inopportune time for my wife to get sick, especially since we don't have any way to watch the game at our apartment without access to television. If I stay home to take care of my wife instead of watching the game +50 points.

2. However, the reality was: being the gracious wife that she was, even though she was writhing in pain in bed from stomach flu nastiness, she told me to go to our small group's Superbowl party; -600 points.

3. She had already told me to go to church without her earlier that day, which I dutifully did of course, (+10 points for my Christian resume but not my Husbandly one)

4. But I skipped the 2nd service where I was supposed to be on the greeting team. +30 points for choosing to take care of my wife at the risk of greeting team expulsion.

5. During the Superbowl Cassie texted me and I responded promptly to make sure she was ok and brighten her mood. only +2 points because I didn't text her first

6. Then again...I didn't want to wake her up by texting her while she was resting...+15 points for being considerate of her rest.

7. I promised her that I would come home as soon as there was a clear winner and actually left before the end of the game. + 50 points

8. I left with 1:04 left in the 4th quarter. -15 points

9. This morning I got up earlier than my wife to take care of some things around the apartment. +50 points

10. I didn't get up until 8 am. - 10 points

11. I didn't wake up my wife by being awake before she was. + 450 points (maybe 452 points depending on the morning)

12. When she did wake up she joined me in the office/guest room and laid on the bed as I read the bible silently. +5 points for reading the bible...-5 points for not reading it out loud with her

13. I went to work today to "bring home the bacon" while she stayed at home in bed to rest. + 25 points for being a man and wearing the pants (thanks Dockers Superbowl commercial)

14. When I got home, the house was cleaner and Cassie was looking better. +30 points for noticing the house was cleaner and telling her she looked better

15. Tonight in our class we are taking together I didn't linger afterward for 20-30 minutes like I usually do. + 25 points

Well, let's see, how did I do? If my math is right I got a 62 for this weekend. Not quite passing. Luckily, this will probably not be the only test I ever get so hopefully I can bring up my lifetime average to passing.

If you read this in the next 24 hours, you should pray for Cassie's stomach and whatever bacteria and viruses dwell therein. Pray that the bad stuff would be karate-chopped and that she would be able to eat solid food again without serious pain.

(Do I get any extra credit for asking you to pray for her?)
