Here's the deal: 4+ months into this baby life, I have a few things things I think have been key to our survival. Some people have asked me what those things are. My memory isn't always so quick right now, so I'm writing it down so I can just refer to this post. These are just things I'd rather not have to do this early parenthood thing without. None of them are really necessities, per se (all a baby really needs is a food source, a place to sleep, and a way to get cleaned every so often).
1. Amazon Prime- I am so thankful for our Amazon Prime Membership for lots of reasons. Free 2 day shipping is great for diapers/wipes, dry groceries, over-the-counter medicines, or that random product everybody keeps SWEARING by. As a newborn's parent there's no guarantee that you're going to get out of the house in the next 2 days anyhow, so having someone bring your shopping to your doorstep is perfect. You can also stream movies and TV shows, which is great for those early days of nonstop nursing sessions. For Kindle owners, borrowing a book a month for free is another perk. Whether that book is for infant care or escape reading while you nurse: you decide.
2. Lactation consulant(s): if you're going to be nursing, sometimes it sucks at first and you question your sanity. A good lactation consultant (these are free at most hospitals) will save the day. Just call at will. This too shall pass.
3. Large muslin swaddle blankets (like Aden + Anais Swaddle Blankets) are great for swaddling, burp cloths, as nursing covers, sun shade, and Addy now likes to use them as chew toys. They go anywhere and everywhere with us to this day.
4. The glider rocker. Any rocker, really. Our friends bequeathed theirs to us (thanks!), and we've rocked MILES in that thing.
5. Baby carriers- Y'all, there are people out there who swear by and swear against "baby wearing." Whatever. For me, it's very helpful for getting things done around the house even if Addy's being a total fuss-pot, or for going through the store without having to tell people to quit touching my baby (it happens and is okay, but sometimes I don't have the patience). She's not even in it everyday, but it's nice to have. I've tried a few carriers, and so far my favorite is the Balboa. I also like our plain ol' Infantino Flip, but it's a little more of a pain to get situated. Just depends on our needs for the day.
6. Sunshine: It's is like a reset button for Addy. And hey- it's free!
7. My space-saver swing/bouncer. It's efficient, and it keeps Addy occupied long enough for me to get ready in the mornings. It was the only reason I got regular showers in the early days.
8. Meals from friends- Online meal/care planners are awesome. Our friends provided 3 meals every week for the first 6 weeks. Some planners allow for cleaning and childcare volunteers, if desired. Fabulously helpful.
