Why the Pomos Miss the Point

I was reading a book review today of Donald Miller's newest book called A Million Miles in a Thousand Years.

I have read many of Miller's books including Blue Like Jazz and To Own a Dragon. I have always felt that his books were good, easy to read generally enjoyable. However, I always finish them with a tinge of disappointment. While Miller tends to say a lot of good things that I am glad to read, it is the things he omits or chooses not to say that upset me.

Maybe Miller is choosing to appeal to a wider audience than mainstream Christianity (probably true). Maybe he is attempting to say a lot of things simply for their shock value (a typical PostModern move). Maybe he is too immature to realize that numerous people are incredibly influenced by what he writes. Whatever the case may be, his books are never as good as they could be because he fails to mention the solution to all the problems and questions he raises. Apart from a good, sovereign God who manifested Himself in the person of Jesus Christ, no story will ever have ultimate meaning and no son will ever find his true father.

Regardless of what the Post Moderns say, people want and need answers to their questions about purpose, suffering, eternity and providence...even if they are incredibly difficult to stomach. Asking more questions or skirting issues altogether will never bring the "healing" and "new creation" the Pomos talk about so much. Only Jesus Christ can provide those things according to His purposes and in His timing. So don't be afraid to "take a stand" on some of the unpopular issues if you are offering the only possible solution, the gospel of Jesus Christ.
