I must say that my affinity for women's tennis is not as large as many other things in my life. However, tonight Cassie and I were able to watch the finals of the US Open Women's Championship between Kim Clijsters and Caroline Wozniacki even though we don't have cable, satellite or a regular antenna. "How?" you ask. The answer my friends is the amazing gift of broadband internet and ESPN360.com.ESPN360.com
For those of you who are either cheap, poor or intentionally choose to live without a TV yet still like to watch sports, this is definitely for you. In order to access this wonderful resource for cheap sports fans everywhere all you have to do is create a free account and sign in. As long as your internet speed is fast enough you can stream LIVE sports straight from ESPN. Pretty much anything that they have on ESPN you can watch on ESPN360.com. I discovered this yesterday and had to test it out to see if it was true. I kept looking for the catch or the obligatory pop-up ad requiring me to pay $19.95 per month for this service, but it never came...and I don't think it ever will. Sure, we had to watch the same commercials for the whole 100 minute match, but it was free and surprisingly clear for streaming video. And about 3 weeks ago I bought a VGA cable to connect our laptop to the TV that was passed down to us from Cassie's mom. We watched the entirety of the match on a widescreen TV streaming it through the internet. Can you tell that I am still shocked at how awesome technology can be sometimes?
After learning so much about the wonders of streaming live TV for free on the internet I wanted to see if I could find a way to watch Sunday afternoon football the same way. The answer...it is possible my friends. A website called Channelsurfing.net has a pretty good selection of sporting events and other major live TV events for free. This site is not nearly as seamless as ESPN360 but it was better than what I had two weeks ago...nothing.
I recognize that in all these exciting technological discoveries I must not lose sight of my ultimate goal which is pursuing relationship with my wife and my God. May my insights be helpful for you yet not ultimately distracting. We all know there is much more to life than watching a bunch of grown men throw around a ball for 3 hours. Sports will likely always be fun for me to watch, but I must take care that they do not find the place of greatest worth in my heart. May that spot be reserved for Jesus Christ alone.
